Stories of family are the primary ones of our lives. My memoir has helped me connect to my own family and has introduced me to stories of other people’s families, often just as (or more) complex than mine.
I met a woman who was born in Germany and raised in the US, but didn’t know she wasn’t a US citizen until adulthood. Her mother, she told me, “took her secrets to the grave.” I heard from another reader who was born in the same city as I was and took a similar journey back to discover her roots. There was the bookseller who told me she, an adoptee, met her biological siblings later in life and found new family after her adoptive one had passed.
I’m thrilled to have Magical Realism for Non-Believers included on a list from The Rumpus (What To Read When You’re Seeking a Family of Choice). The list appeared just as I was reuniting with my own family during a wedding in California.
