I've been on Twitter for many years now and often saw the #pitchwars hashtag pop up on my feed. I suspected it had something to do with writing, but it wasn't until another writer suggested I participate that I found out what it is.
Pitch Wars is a contest in which authors and agents help unpublished writers turn their manuscripts into books. That's a lot of people working to make new books welcome in the world.
Without really knowing what I was doing, I submitted my query to a few mentors. In the questions I received from them, I could already see lots of potential for revising my book. I was ready to rewrite even before I was selected by Jen Vincent (she was a Secret Mentor, whatever that means). I'm excited to be able to work with someone who has read (and presumably liked) my work-in-progress, a middle-grade contemporary novel called What If a Fish.
