Today was a "day without immigrants" nationwide in protest of the current administration's rhetoric about immigrants. And on this day, the Pew Research Center released data about how the US has the highest immigration rate of any country and the CCBC released its stats for diversity in children's books.
This got me thinking about culture and identity and my own work and paradigm. I'm not an immigrant to the US; I am a foreign-born citizen. And my work-in-progress isn't about immigrants.
But my current project (for children) is about crossing borders and combining cultures. It's about the beiging and blurring of America. It is a representation of what it's like to be "other" in this country and in another. It is through stories that we learn empathy and see ourselves reflected back.
