Sandra Benitez

"You have to write what's in your heart."
~Sandra Benitez
I had the good fortune recently to meet the fabulous Sandra Benitez. Born in the US, this self-described gringa-Latina was raised in Mexico and El Salvador. She writes about issues of Latin America and of women and culture. Her first book, A Place Where the Sea Remembers, won several awards including the Barnes & Nobel Discover award and Minnesota Book Award, and she has also taught and lectured widely. Despite these successes, she is a generous, down-to-earth soul who was willing to talk candidly with an emerging writer about the challenges of writing, the experience of growing up gringa-Latina, and the rewards of family and travel.
