Writing About the Self

The Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis is one of the country's largest literary organizations. A View from Loft, originally the print newsletter from the Loft, is now published online, and an anthology culled from the publication's back issues was published by Milkweed Editions and the Loft in 2010.

This week's issue features my article about the challenges of memoir writing: Writing About the Self by Exploring Point of View.


The things we enjoy about reading personal stories—the gritty, unvarnished truth of someone’s life—are also the things that can hold us back as writers of creative nonfiction. Our personal bias, self-censorship, and fear often interfere with telling the truth in our stories.
